How Japanese Interval Walking builds aerobic fitness without the pounding

I just discovered something that feels almost too simple to work. A walking technique that gets my heart rate up without the pounding, the gear, or the hills. (No 20lb ruck pack required)

I've been doing a lot of walking lately recovering from a nasty vertigo attack. A couple of weeks ago, I ran across an article about Japanese Interval Walking. It looked interesting, so I gave it a go.

I was pleasantly surprised about not only how easy it was to do, but also how I could get my heart rate up without a lot of effort.

Here's the thing - when you can't run, finding ways to maintain aerobic fitness becomes critical. Japanese Interval Walking turned out to be exactly what I needed during recovery, and I thing it belongs in every older runner's cross-training tool kit.
