A bit about me…
I’m a life long runner who suffered a heart attack at the age of 50, resulting in triple bypass surgery. I went on to enjoy a successful ultra running career, winning age group awards and sponsorship from Hammer Nutrition. But at age 62, I had another heart attack. Something needed to change. That’s when I discovered Maffetone method training and all the benefits for us older runners. But it was hard to implement and it took many trials and tribulations to finally reach success. I was running faster without more effort and I finally lost that last 10 pounds! So I packaged my lessons learned into what I call the “Forever Runner Method” and began coaching older runners on my method. I’m now 72 years old and still enjoying effortless, injury free running and I’m planning on running till I am 100 years old!
Why I started Forever Runner on Substack…
I have a passion for sharing my take on running in your 50’s, 60’s & 70’s, and providing some assistance for my followers. Now I already have a Facebook group, Forever Runners Over 50, with over 10,000 members, and a YouTube channel, Herb the Forever Runner, with over 100 videos. But both those platforms make it extremely difficult to personally connect with fellow runners who would like some help.
So Substack seemed to be the best platform to not only share my book, articles and videos, but also foster a community where we all could share our journeys as we age as runners. The internet is full of advice for runners, most of it not applicable to us older runners or just flashy headlines to draw in our attention. I want my community to have access to proven methods that actually work for us delivered by email and available on a phone app. So whether you like email, phone apps or podcasts, I hope I got you covered!
