Had a great chat this week on my podcast #24 with Darci Hawxhurst about her 2 Week Carb challenge. This is her free class on the Maffetone Method 2 week test.

Our talk brought back memories from about 8 years ago when I discovered the Maffetone Method. I had been training especially hard when I turned 60 to win my new age group in my ultra races. I accomplished that goal and continued on for the next couple of years on the same training schedule, lots of hill work and CrossFit strength training.

The funny thing was, after 12 years of ultra racing, I was still about 10 pounds overweight and couldn’t make a dent on my spare tire around my waist. I was constantly hungry and sleepy after lunch. I just thought it was part of the gig.

Then at 62, I had another mild heart attack. What I was doing wasn’t working, something had to change. That’s when I picked up Dr. Phil Maffetone’s “The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing”.

What I learned from Dr. Phil’s book was that I was training the wrong way, creating too much stress from how I ran, ate and strength trained.

I immediately adopted his method and started the long, frustrating journey of low heart rate training and the surprisingly fast transformation to fat burning.

Dr. Phil’s 2 week test was a simple way to remove inflammatory foods (mostly processed carbs) from your diet and switch your metabolism back to it’s default fat burning state.
